Birthplace of the Binder Millennium Man’s Landfestival, cultural.qxp

In 1206, Temuujin became Chinggis Khaan, the great khan of the Mongols, having succeeded in rallying to his person all the dispersed Mongol and Turkish tribes, and having destroyed his powerful enemies, the Tatars, the Hereit, and the Naiman. After he united the Mongol tribes, the Mongols swept over north China, taking Dadu (as Beijing was then called), attacking and defeating the sultan of Kharezm, who ruled over a large part of Central Asia (Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Afghanistan, and the most of Iran) Samarkand and Bukhara, before crossing the Caucasus and defeating the Russians and the Qipqak Turks in the Crime.

Day 1: Ulaanbaatar
The Mongolei Reisen crew will greet you at the Buyant-Ukhaa International Airport for transfer to the 4 star hotel, conveniently situated in downtown Ulaanbaatar. After freshening up from your trip, we will spend the day touring some of the capital’s most noteworthy sites starting out at the capital of
Mongolian Buddhism, Gandan Monastery. The monastery was one of the few preserved through the 20th century and features a spectacular 25 meter, 20 ton statue of the Megjjd Janraysig Buddha. From here, we will go to the Natural History Museum which holds the skeletons of several of the unique dinosaurs discovered in Mongolia, including the famed ‘Fighting Dinosaurs’ skeletons-considered to be one of the most unique in the world. The heart of Ulaanbaatar, Sukhbaatar Square, is just a short walk away. Here we will see the statue of Sukhbaatar, the hero of the Mongolian revolution, the Parliament house, National Opera, and City Hall. Afterwards we’ll visit Zaisan Hill, which offers great views of the city. In the evening, you will attend a performance of traditional dancing and khoomii (Mongolian throat singing). Overnight in hotel. (L, D)

Day 2: Khentii Province
We depart early in the morning for Khentii Province, east of Ulaanbaatar. Along the way, we
will meet with nomadic herders of sheep, cattle and horses to learn a little about this ancient Mongolian lifestyle. Overnight in a ger camp near Jargalant Valley (B, L, D)

Day 3: Bereeven Monastery Ruins
We will spend the day visiting the pristine Khangal Lake and the ruins of Bereeven Monastery, built in 1777 and destroyed during the religious purges of 1937-1940. This is a beautiful area with great opportunities for exploring the ruins, hikes, relaxing by the lake, and searching the nearby Thirteen Sansar Mountains for sacred images painted on the
rocks. Overnight in a ger camp (B, L, D)

Days 4 – 5: Dadal County
As we continue to explore the historic landscape of Khentii province, where every hill, mountain, river and rock has a story to tell, we will visit a very special site. Khentii is the birthplace of Chinggis Khaan – founder of the greatest land empire the world has ever known – and a monument marks his place of birth. Our guides will tell you about the deep historical associations of this region and the significance of Chinggis in modern Mongolia. Overnight in a ger camp (B, L, D)

Day 6: Binder County
Next we travel to Binder county, crossed by two of Mongolia’s largest rivers, the Onon and Balj, and home to a large population of Buryat Mongols. The Buryats are closely tied to ethnic Mongols but have maintained their own culture and language. We will visit a nomadic Buryat family to experience their unique lifestyle. Overnight in a ger camp (B, L, D)

Day 7: Gun Galuutain Natural Reserve
We start the day with a short two-hour drive to the stunning Gun Galuutain Nature Reserve, nestled in the Khentii Mountains. This is a great place to flyfish on the Kherlen River, with its abundance of rare fish species – including the Taimen salmon, Lenok trout, Silurid catfish and pike. There are also numerous short hikes and several local families that we will visit to learn more about the countryside lifestyle. Overnight in a ger camp (B, L, D)

Day 8: Kherlen River / Ulaanbaatar
Before heading back to Ulaanbaatar we will spend the first part of the day exploring the beautiful Kherlen River area on horseback, in the company of local nomads.
